Following the success of the AC/DC Back in Black collection in 2018, Vinylize Eyewear has released a new three-piece collection of frames crafted from AC/DC’s 2009 Black Ice album. The collection is accompanied by a selection of image photographs focusing on perceptions of black ice to lend the collection an air of sophistication that goes beyond the hedonistic, rock ‘n’ roll message of the iconic Australian brand.
The Black Ice frames feature a layered interior lamination visible only when viewed from certain angles, making them as subtle and deceptive as black ice itself. The collection is headlined by two sunglass models with names derived from tracks on the Black Ice album. Both Ice and War are at the forefront of current eyewear trends: War sports an oversized square design while the Ice shape is a faceted small oval.
The products are officially licensed by AC/DC and branded with the band’s signature lightning bolt inlaid in chrome on the temples. The interiors of the temples are heat stamped with the Vinylize x AC/DC moniker, and the temple tips are engraved with a serial number to demonstrate authenticity. Each frame comes with a guarantee card, a wiping branded cloth and a branded case featuring vinyl in its construction. The frames are packaged in their own biodegradable box.
This is the second AC/DC collection to be released by the Budapest-based eyewear brand. The first was crafted from the iconic Back in Black album released in 1980. On this occasion, founder Zack Tipton has developed a unique photo concept reflecting on the unusual properties of black ice.
“Rather than drawing on classic rock ‘n’ roll imagery, we wanted to play with the idea of black ice – a smooth, often invisible surface you might only notice after it is too late,” Tipton explains. “Our photo shoot shows an attractive model following what appears to be a nasty fall – the fallen angel who has descended into darkness. The idea is that fashion and beauty are one thing, but we can all come crashing down at any moment. This is the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, we all have darkness somewhere in our hearts – and sometimes we just have to embrace it.”
The Black Ice collection will be available at selected boutique opticians and is available to purchase from www.vinylize.com as of February 2019.

Our story starts back in 2000, when Zack Tipton began experimenting with plastics and found his father’s record collection in the garage. This abundant collection of unwanted vinyl was made to serve a different purpose, but Zack came upon the idea of transforming it into eyewear. The first series was made from old communist-era vinyl found at Hungarian flea markets. Following years of testing, experimenting and developing the best technologies, the first Vinylize collection was launched in 2004.
Since then Vinylize has worked with Maui Jim and provided frames for many music industry greats, including Sir Richard Branson, Elton John, Robbie Williams, Elvis Costello, and Fred Durst. Today, Vinylize repurposes over three tons of vinyl per year and the brand’s products are sold globally.
