Optical Fun For William Tell Day

William Tell Day is November 18. This is the day in 1307 that William Tell shot the apple off his sons head. Why? For those of us who forgot the story, he was commanded to by the tyrant of a governor in Austria who ruled William Tell’s province in Switzerland.  Is the story truth or fiction? No one really seems to know but according to legend this was the start of Switzerland gaining independence from Austria.

What is not true.. there were no eye charts in 1307. In fact while types of lenses were used to magnify, the first eyeglasses seemed to have been made in Italy circa 1286. But in a sermon delivered on February 23, 1306, the Dominican friar Giordano da Pisa (ca. 1255–1311) wrote “It is not yet twenty years since there was found the art of making eyeglasses, which make for good vision.
