Optical Blog Grog – “Opti Lemon Drop”

I introduced some optical friends to this Optical Blog Grog – “Opti Lemon Drop” at a Vision Council meeting in Phoenix a couple of years ago. It was made extra special with the addition of dry ice which smokes so if you are having a party and want to do something fun you can include the dry ice but the sugar rimmed glass is a party pleaser anyway! The sweetness of the sugar on the glass offsets the tartness of the lemon beautifully.

Here is my recipe for a perfect “Opti Lemon Drop”

You can make “Opti Lemon Drops” ahead of time and keep in the fridge and as it is labor intensive squeezing lemons I recommend that you do make a batch rather than just one or two individually. I haven’t discovered a ready made mix that is nearly as good so it is worth squeezing your own lemons. I bought a cheap electric juicer just for making these. You will need a juicer, martini glasses, 6 or more lemons, sugar, vodka and Triple Sec.

In a large jug, mix 1 cup fresh lemon juice (Meyers lemons are the best but expensive), 1 cup of vodka, half-cup of Triple Sec or any sweet citrus liquor, half-cup of water. Put in the fridge for at least one hour. When you are ready to serve add lots of ice and stir well. Take a wedge of lemon and wipe around the rim of each glass then roll the glass rim in fine sugar so that it sticks to the juice. Pour your “Opti Lemon Drop” mix into each glass, garnish with lemon peel, pucker up and serve immediately. Please drink responsibly.
