Lack Of Speed Kills…….Your Ranking

Google announced recently that they will start considering mobile speed in ranking websites. Starting in July of 2018, page speed will become a ranking factor in mobile search. What does that mean to you? Perhaps nothing, perhaps a lot.

Having built websites for ECP’s for a number of years, I can attest to most business owners not knowing and not caring about who or where their website is hosted. ECP’s are not unique in this arena by any means, as law firms, cosmetic companies, and spas I have worked with all shared the same lack of knowledge about the difference a good host can make.

Yes, there are big differences in web hosts and web hosting plans. One could say those differences are much the same as we have in eyewear, between various frame manufacturers based on design, color, materials, workmanship, and so on. Website hosting companies are not all selling a commodity any more than you are.

Which brings us back to the subject at hand. How long will you wait for a website to load? Not your own, but other sites you are searching? This morning, I received an email about grocery prices from a national chain I have a membership with. I underline national chain here as they of all people have the resources to spend on internet infrastructure.

They had a photograph in the email featuring crab and lobster. Who doesn’t love crab and lobster? If the price was right, I knew what we might be making for Sunday dinner this week. I don’t know what the prices were, however. I clicked the link on my desktop, where we have a fiber optic high-speed internet and after waiting for the food website to load I gave up after waiting 20 seconds. 20 seconds! Most people won’t wait 5 seconds before pressing the back button.

According to Google, 53% of mobile users abandon websites that take longer than 3 seconds to load.

Three seconds… WOW! Research says mobile sites that load in 5 seconds earned almost double the revenue of sites that took 19 seconds to load.

How is the internet in your office? In your home? In your car? Most us experience slower internet speeds on our mobile phones than our desktops and laptops. Someone in their car isn’t waiting. They want and need your information now. If they can’t access it, the handful of dollars you saved buying cheap hosting just flew out of your register, didn’t it?

This is why Google will start ranking speed on your mobile website starting this July…your website is mobile, isn’t it? Your livelihood might depend on it.
