In Memory of Michael DeSanto and Phil Whitaker

Today is a very tough day- I just found out that another friend of mine, Phil Whitaker, also just passed away. Thinking back 30 years ago with Phil Whitaker, Charlie Pendrell, (retired, formerly Sierra Optical)  Ed Dietz, (Dietz Labs) Fred (Augen)  Tim Kirchberg, (Classique)  Dave Birch, (Maui Jim) and quite a few others what fun we used to have. Phil, a small town Tennessee boy, coming to live the California beach life, gave us ‘locals’ hours of good times and funny stories and boy could he talk!. My non-optical friends loved him as well. Phil was a good friend to me over the last 30 years, was always there for me and I will truly miss him, as I know others will as well.

Michael DiSanto- We received this message from the OAA:

“It is with a heavy heart that this message is sent out today.  Mike DiSanto, a prominent optical educator and friend of the Opticians Association of America, passed away on Monday after losing his battle with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. Mike DiSanto spent much of his long career teaching basic and continuing education courses to thousands of opticians, optometrists, ophthalmologists, lab personnel, customer service personnel, and vendor representatives.  His educational materials and two books, TOPS and ABO Review Course, have helped and will continue to help hundreds each year prepare for certification.

  1. I took several classes at Vision Expo thru the years with Michael DiSanto. I’m very saddened by his passing. He was always informative and managed to make the class he was teaching fun, not dry and dull like so many others.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
    He will be missed.

  2. I had taked a class with Mr. DiSanto and am very sad to hear of his passing. He was a natural teacher with a passion for opticianry. I am truly blesses to have been one of his students. I learned so much! My prayers to his family.
