While in New York City for Vision Expo I took a journey down to lower Manhattan to see the legendary Fabulous Fanny’s at 335 E. 9th Street. Started some 25 years ago by Ken Finneran and Stan Blackmer, this store has been a mecca for vintage eyeglasses and sunglasses. Shopped by movie stars and celebrities the world over, this tiny store is truly something worth seeing for those of us whose lives are all things optical. I was able to take a short video inside the store which I will share here for those who aren’t able to make it to New York City, just yet, to see the store in person.
Recently, Bob Hillman and Larry Bell started working with Ken Finneran to recreate some of the most iconic styles of the 30s, 40’s, 50s, and 60s found inside Fabulous Fannys to produce a line of eyewear and sunwear made in Italy with top quality components from Italy, France, Germany, and Japan. Their booth inside the Javits Center was as close a representation of the actual store as one could possibly make, virtually transporting you the actual store while standing miles away in the Javits Center. Just as exciting as it is to see such wonderful styles and colors recreated for today’s optical shops, is the enthusiasm and energy of these three optical veterans. Their smiles and their joie de vivre are just as iconic as their eyewear. If you missed seeing them at Vision Expo, be sure to check them out online at FabulousFannysNYC.com.
