We love this little optical trivia Eye Need to Know questions – so what is MBS? Is it a disease, an eyewear line? Most of you probably know….

MBS: Minimum Blank Size:  The smallest lens blank that can be used and still cut out to fit a frame. Eyewear size and patient pupillary distance will both effect the minimum size that can be used. That’s why we need those handy dandy lens cut out charts that the lens vendors provide.  Also a good opportunity to demonstrate to your optical customer, why it is so important to measure the frame, the PD etc. for their specific prescription frame and lens choice.

The lens vendors web sites are good resources for information. We particularly like Vision-Ease as the website has a Product Specifications page that is easy to navigate with technical tips, specifications for all lens products and materials including VCA Formatted Lens Description Standard (LDS) Files

  • Lens Data Specifications (Complete List)-Excel
  • Lens Data Specifications (Complete List)-Text

Signet Armorlite has a nice new website for their  Kodak Lens as well, again very easy to navigate with lots of technical information.

  1. I am all for getting the proper information quickly to make the best job I can for the patient. One caveat, though, to this article is that especially anyone who has a pattern maker and sends that information to the lab to order by circumvents our need to know what MBS is needed to fill the order. Even without using the pattern maker, if we order a job from a lab by way of the computer, in our case DVI, we give the lab the box measurements of the frame and the lab itself determines the MBS for the frame. That being said, like the article states, that shows the importance of giving the lab the proper box measurements of the frame to come up with the proper MBS.
