ClearVision Introduces New Customizable Kids Brand


ClearVision Optical’s newest brand partner: Funoogles, is a revolutionary eyewear collection for children, ages 6-12, that offers the ultimate in kid-friendly frame customization. With endless opportunities to mix and match frame fronts and temple colors, the line provides an affordable, kids’ eyewear solution that is fun for parents and children alike. Founder Jessica Darcy developed the concept in 2015 along with her daughter, Ella-Jane, who was born with a congenital cataract. Ella-Jane wished for eyewear that would match her ever-changing style and mood, and thus began the Funoogles story.

Chapter two for Funoogles includes ClearVision Optical, a designer and distributor of eyewear for many of today’s top brands. Funoogles and ClearVision were destined for one another: the two businesses are based in Long Island, New York and have had synergy from the start. As a leader in the pediatric and kids’ eyewear space, ClearVision was looking to expand its children’s portfolio, just as Funoogles was seeking a partner to help further the reach of its clever kids’ product; and in 2019, the partnership came to fruition. Beyond a vast knowledge in kids’ frames, ClearVision also understands interchangeable eyewear, having developed a customizable, 3-piece collection and technology system for celebrated house brand, Aspire, as well as a line of personalized men’s frames for Izod.

“It was a very natural fit for Funoogles and ClearVision,” says David Friedfeld, President of ClearVision Optical. “My father, Fred Friedfeld – who was a big kid himself – always had an affinity for children’s frames and we have specialized in this market now for the past 30 years. And, we are always looking to inject fun into our business, whether that be with our customers, employees, or in the products that we offer. We also pride ourselves on bringing innovation to the market. All of this combined with everything we love about Jessica and the Funoogles brand made this a match made in optical heaven.”

Adds Jessica Darcy, “We are thrilled to be joining the ClearVision family.  Funoogles has been a family driven business since Ella-Jane first asked why she couldn’t change the frame front of her new glasses with the sides from her old pair.  From our first meeting, it was clear that all of the employees of ClearVision were family to the Friedfelds and carried the same pride of ownership in all of their brands that we have for our products at Funoogles.  David and his team also understood the importance of the Funoogles mission to provide affordable eyewear to kids that is fun, colorful and allows them to express their unique and creative selves.  That mission was present in every aspect of development with ClearVision.  The deep industry expertise of ClearVision will allow us to execute this mission and to deliver our products to kids across the globe.”

Once Funoogles and ClearVision came together, the CVO product team spent 12 months in its research and development phase before finalizing the new and improved product with an assortment of eye shapes in an expanded size range, new multi-colored parts, updated materials, new spring hinges, and an optional sun clip with Polarized lenses,  all with a perfect, kid-friendly fit, at an affordable price point.

The starter Funoogles kit features one clear base front in a choice of three shapes, each with spring hinges, 2 clips – one brow and one full – and 2 pairs of temples, each part in your choice of colors, all of which retails for $149.99. A Polarized sun clip, as well as any other accessory, can be added for $20.

Says ClearVision Manager of Product Development, Cathy Kaye, “Funoogles is a fun product that sparks creativity; working with Jessica and Ella-Jane to design the new frames was truly a delight. Creating this collection gave me the opportunity to push our boundaries and address the design and development process differently. We wanted children to be fully involved, and to help us with our market research we hosted a whimsical, kid-friendly “focus group” party, complete with a photo booth, arcade games, and custom 3D-printed toys. Of course, Pediatric Specialist ECPs were involved every step of the way as well as our Senior Staff Optician, Marty Mast, to ensure that the line is functional and that the fit is on point. In the end, we built a collection that offers a variety of shapes and endless color combination options for our Funoogles fans to enjoy.”

To help tell the Funoogles story to ECPs and end-consumers, ClearVision also developed point of purchase materials that perfectly captured the essence of the Funoogles brand. Says Creative Lead, Mary Tarantino, “Our merchandising team was challenged to develop a display system that not only provided an opportunity for children to easily personalize their eyewear, but to create something that was organized and functional as well.  Since Funoogles is such a fun product we wanted the display to speak to that.  We evaluated many different design concepts and worked with current Funoogles retailers to ensure that we designed and produced the best possible retail experience for the collection.”
