Back to school time offers many networking and community out reach programs for eyecare professionals. While you may not be in the kids biz and stocking kids eyewear, there are opportunities to reach out with local sororities and fraternities.
I know my niece was in a Sororities and they were very active in community outreach. Dr. Vincent Young in the Transitions Blog reminds us that Greeks have been philanthropic for generations and this is an area in which you can reach out to your local colleges and set up a Give Back Program.
A Few Examples of Sorority Eyeglass Collections:
- Cortlandt Manor, New York, April 2013 — As a special service project, Xi Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will be collecting used eyeglasses at selected locations in the area during the months of April to June, 2013. This will be our 3rd year collecting used eyeglasses. The donated glasses and other items will be sent to New Eyes for the Needy, a New Jersey-based, non-profit volunteer organization whose main purpose is to provide better vision to the poor in the United States and throughout the world.
- February is the official month of ‘low vision,’ Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. would like to request to conduct an official eyeglass collection drive from Feb 15-TBA. (Preferably until the end of the month, or until sufficient items are collected.)
- The Farwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will present more than one thousand eyeglasses to give the “gift of sight” to people around the world. The donation will be made during the sorority’s Social Action Luncheon at the 47th Farwest Regional Conference to be held at the Dena’ina Convention Center in Anchorage, AK
