  1. ECPs should recommend or dispense ocular nutritional supplements to their AMD or at-risk AMD patients. However, before jumping into “adding sales”, even for those who are already buying, it is the ophthalmologist’s and optometrist’s responsibility to identify those patients who are candidates. It would be a disservice to sell a life-long regimen of eye vitamins to patients who are not at risk for macular disease.

    Heterochromatic Flicker Photometer, Preferential Hyperacuity Perimetry, and Optical Coherence Tomography are some of the most useful diagnostic tools as is the identification of serious risk factors like age, smoking, obesity, hypertension and family history.
