We recently asked our subscribers what they most wanted to hear about on our optical blog and there were several requests for success stories from independent optical retailers. Therefore, we would love to hear from you and what you have found works for you or your customers.
- How do you compete with the optical chains, especially if you have similar product?
- How do you differentiate you services?
- How do you compete with online eyewear providers, marketing that has worked for you etc. is what we are looking for.
Let us know in the comments below this post, and we will include your story in a future post. Submit your $uccess story by October 1, 2010 and you could win an Amazon Gift Card for $50 for your story. But the real reward is sharing with your optical peers and improving the optical consumers’ experience.

By far the most effective advertising is my business card in the local PFLAG monthly newsletter. Cost is only $50 a year so only one exam more than pays for it.
Accessories are often overlooked as a profit center. Take for example a well made polarized clip on sunglass. After the eyewear is finished, but before the patient picks them up, include in their tray a matching pair of quality clip on sunwear. On a post it note write ” LOOK WHAT I FOUND”. During the dispensing you won’t even have to mention the clips if you position them right in front of the patient. Everyone wins. They get polarized sun protection and you have an addition sale.
Good morning,
I just like to say thank so much for sharing all the info with us, every day the first thing I do is check my inbox to see what topics will help me build a better practice. I work with an ophthalmologist and one optometrist we do a lot of cataract surgeries, as a courtesy I fill out form for Medicare customers for payment request, a lot of senior or clients with Medicare insurance are not aware that Medicare will pay for their first pair of glasses after cataracts. Reimbursements are from $75.00 to $150.00.
My tip for sales is educating clients with newest technologies and I match them with their life style for multiple pairs.

Hello,
I’m Susan Mitchell and am the mother of the free form idea..
The tale began somewhere from 1982-85..(i honestly don”t remember the exact date). I worked for Paul Shook at Texas Progressive Lens Lab as a tech in mfg..a representative from a lens mfg came in ..we were discussing “optical putty” and pushing it around to eliminate distortion in the periphiry..My father had worked for Bell Helicopter for many years and had told me about a great machine they had that mfg’d things in 3-D (sort of..ya just had to know how to program it) I told the gentleman how it would be possible to put half the add power on the back of the lens..we even discussed some about tooling..I told him if he took the idea back to his R&D people ..I did want credit for the idea..looks like he did take it..but it looks like I havent gotten the credit for it…so lesson learned!!!!!
I know you won’t be able to post my comment..but it felt extremely nice to get that off my chest.. thank you !!
We approved it as it is an interesting story. Often ideas come from people working with products and that sparks more ideas. Other people may have been experimenting with similar thoughts and then it became a reality. You were truly forward thinking and a smart person, if you had been with a lens manufacturer you may have been able to work with a team and get the deserved credit.
It would have been really wonderful to know the man had been at least trying to find me to make sure I got recognition for the idea…
