Optometrist Pole Dancing For Eye Health

Pole dancing is a sport that lets women get a great workout and express themselves, while keeping their clothes on, she said. It’s a “fabulous form of expression” that also helps women get “those Madonna arms,” she said.
Eksupar Tongsri is a University of Virginia graduate and a New York optometrist. She also competed in Sunday’s show.
Tongsri has always been a fan of fitness, but nothing made her feel as strong as pole dancing does, she said.
That’s not to say it’s ballet on a pole. Gymnastics or yoga accompanied by music on a pole might be closer to the truth.

And, of course, it does have its roots in what are termed “gentlemen’s” clubs. In that regard it might not be in such bad company. The ballroom tango is said to be descended from dances of the bordellos of Buenos Aires. Pole dancing first broke out of the strip club in Britain and Australia in the 1990s, Traskos said. From there, it moved to California.
At first, taking pole-dancing lessons may have been about being “naughty,” but women found that it gave them a tremendous workout. (Dancers support themselves upside down with only their hands, do the dance equivalent of vertical sit-ups and much more.)
In recent years, the workout factor has grown in prominence and the dance style has spread across the country, Traskos said
