My sister-in-law passed a Discovery Eye Foundation newsletter on to me as she thought it might be interesting for the blog. I don’t know this organization but found the newsletter very informative and thought it would be a good idea to pass on the link. I think it might be a good information resource for all optical providers and I am sure many of you know about Discovery Eye Foundation already. I particularly liked the article about Macular Degeneration as it is features a patient and her experience. One of the things that helps her manage is a monthly support group sponsored by the Macular Degeneration Partnership (MDP). This is such a widespread condition that the more resources we know about it the better. I personally know several people with this disability and know that they haven’t all been given as much information and support from their optical provider as they would like. A good tip to pass along to computer users – any web page can be made larger and, therefore easier to read. On a Mac, hold down the apple key and click the +(plus) key to blow up the page; on a PC, hold the control key and click the + key. Conversely, the -(minus) key will make the page smaller.

There are many other articles in this Discovery Eye Foundation newsletter, some with new information, for example: Eradicating Ocular Herpes – Current drug therapies used to combat OH treat the disease, but not the virus itself. Dr. Anthony Nesburn, medical director of DEF and vice chair for research in the Ophthalmology Department of UC Irvine, and Dr. Lbachir BenMohamed are developing a novel lipopeptide vaccine that wold provide an effective and less costly means of preventing and treating OH.
