Quite a few people have asked us where do we see the future of eyecare and what are the optical trends. Over the next couple of weeks, I will share with you what I think will be the hot optical trends into 2010 and beyond.

One of the top trends that you will see more of is ‘Wearable Technology’. Wearable technology encompasses a dual function-technology  that you can wear. USB ports in necklaces, video eyewear, wristwatch phones, sunglasses that double as digital music players, jackets with GPS functions, backpacks with solar panels, bluetooth communication that monitors heart rate, bluetooth headset in a pair of earrings, USB heating gloves, T-shirts that show your emotions are a few if the latest fashion and health wearable technology trends.

You  might see in the same category: Smart Fashion, Smart Clothes, Extra Sensory Media, Digital Art , Performance Based Technologies and Interactive Fashion.

In the past wearable technology has been mainly targeted toward the gadget freak, the person who just has to have the latest (my nephew!) I believe as the market evolves and becomes more affordable you will see your mainstream optical vendors introducing some type of fashion and electronic functionality into their product mix. Oakley (Thump) was the first to come out with  bluetooth eyewear Calvin Klein introduced the first ‘branded’ eyewear with a USB port, and TriSpecs was the first tech eyewear company to exhibit at Vision Expo. Eyeware with USB ports, video capabilities, music functions. bluetooth eyewear and solar paneled sunglasses will become  mainstream items. I vision eyeware that monitors insulin levels and heart rates within the next couple of years.  Large companies such as Motorola, Sony and Oakley and  Carl Zeiss are already in the wearable technology market. Others will follow.
