Social Media Eyes By Crystal- Social Media Terminology

For those people who are new to social media, or for those who are trying to decide if it is right for them some of the lingo can get confusing.  Here is a list of commonly used terms and what they mean:

  • Facebook- popular website for creating and maintaining social networks, through the use of news updates, photo sharing, web links, advertisements and games
  • Friend- someone the user allows into their social network
  • Friend Request- a request from one user to another to be allowed into a social network- Acknowledgement or permission is required prior to being given access to view each other’s personal information
  • Wall – personal area on Facebook where comments and updates are displayed for Friends to view
  • Posts- brief stories, news or updates that are shown on the Facebook users Wall
  • News Feed- collection of recent Posts pulled from the Facebook Wall of the users Friends
  • Fan Page- webpage within Facebook designated to a particular topic, person or organization- users can “Become a Fan” or “Like” a page in order to show support and/or receive frequent updates
  • Twitter- popular website/mobile phone application that allows users to discuss topics and provide updates on daily activities
  • Tweet- brief stories, news or updates that are displayed on Twitter (similar to a Post)
  • Blog- website that frequently adds new stories and content, generally run by one or a small number of users, focusing on a particular subject – often uses a conversational writing style
  • RSS Feed- a subscription to a frequently updated website (RSS Reader needed)
  • RSS Reader- a tool to organize and notify the user about newly posted material on the web pages to which they have subscribed (Google Reader is the most commonly used RSS Reader)
