The optical industry is a niche market that doesn’t always seem to fit into standard marketing rules. However when it is broken down the optical industry is the same as any other industry. There are products and services to sell and those products and services need to get in front of potential customers. Social media has become one of the quickest and least expensive ways to get a business name in front of those potential customers.

There are hundreds of social media sites out there. Not all of them are going to be right for every business, but some are. The first one most people think of is Facebook.  It is undoubtedly the most widely known of the social networking sites.

How does this help optical businesses? If an optical business is looking to reach new customers then Facebook is the right place to start. The place to begin is with a Facebook Fan Page. This is entirely free to set up and maintain.

  • 50 % of which log on in any given day
  • 20 million people on Facebook become fans of Pages every day.

If a business does choose to use social media networking it is helpful to know that the best results come from consistent, quality contact with potential customers. This means in order to be effective and get results, someone must continuously put time into this project. Social media marketing requires regular updates be made with information that truly interests target customers.

The good news is that it isn’t as difficult as it may sound. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Post photos of your office and staff (remember to get written consent from staff members)
  • Talk about new products or services you have added
  • Offer discounts or specials to Facebook followers
  • Ask for feedback from customers
