Rent A Sunglass- An Opportunity For Eyecare Professionals

How many times has a customer wanted a pair of sunglasses or even eyewear for a special event or just to look cool in front of an ex, perhaps to complete an outfit, or because they want the image. They love luxury items and can’t afford to buy, don’t really need it, don’t have space. .. Renting fashion accessories especially sunglasses can be good business. Many companies are already doing a bang-up sunglass rental business renting out designer sunglasses and other accessories by the week or the month. Rentals allow the consumer to quickly change their look- a good thing if you are trying to build a fashion-eye-sta clientele.
Many of these accessories rentals have monthly rewards programs as well. First I visited Bagborrowor steal.com who rent new and vintage accessories or bling starting at $5 per month or $50 per year. They offer Chanel, Gucci, Michael Kors, Prada, Tom Ford, Kate Spade, Chloe, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Mark Jacobs, Coach, Lanvin, Tiffany, Linda Farrow, Dior Sunglasses (about 240 styles) to rent. They even have ‘live help’ so you can chat online if you have any questions. They are on Twitter and Facebook and have a blog. Blingyourself.com- also rents sunglasses with above same designers. As a guest you can rent for $30.00 a week, as a member $24.00 per week. Thatbagiwant.com doesn’t rent sunglasses just bags, but you can also buy and sell your designer bags online. (another revenue generator). Somatic Optics a sports eyewear company rents out sunglasses as well.
The biggest items rented are designer clothes, purses and jewelry. Renting out luxury eyewear jewelry from Denise Solay Designs can also be an opportunity.
Is this an opportunity for the eyeglass professional? Yes
- How many times have you put a great color of eyeglasses on a patient and they don’t know if they will like it- so they end up buying boring brown. Why not put plano lenses in a variety of colorful, fun and trendy eyeglasses and offer to let them ‘rent’ for a week to hear about all the compliments they will get.
- How many times has the patient balked at that 2nd or 3rd pair sales, rent them a pair for a week to see if they like it?
- How many times has the patient said, I don’t wear sunglasses, or I only buy the cheap ones. Why not rent them for a week so they can feel and ‘see’ the quality difference.
- How many times has a patient come in and said, I never wear these because they are too uncomfortable? Rent for a week to see if they will work.
The cost is minimal to you. Working the numbers, you pay $75.00 for a pair of sunglasses and rent for a year =$900. Good ROI. Plus, at the end you have two alternatives, 1.) Resell as used 2.) Donate and take the tax write-off.
And the best part: No insurance, it gives you something to blog, Tweet, Facebook and get good press about. You can do this online, put it in your advertising, throw a party, the possibilities are endless and it’s good eye-care.
