Optical Sponsorship of Local Sports Teams

ballsOne of the major challenges for the optical retailer is building consumer awareness as optical consumers do not “browse” and are less likely to just “walk-in”. One way to build local consumer awareness is through the sponsorship of local sports teams. Optical retailers, because of the nature of their business, are in a position to not just sponsor teams but be actively involved with them – supplying safety glasses and/or sports goggles for example. It is not just a question of building name awareness – the word gets out, creating goodwill towards your optical business, especially in smaller communities and typically people go to places, knowing they support the community.

The opportunities for optical sponsorship of local sports teams are numerous and they aren’t limited to having a sign posted in a Little League ballfield or an ad in a program or paper. The name of your optical business can be on the uniforms and other team materials. Optical vendors are often interested in co-sponsorship of local sports teams as well so you can use those co-op dollars more creatively. Transitions I know has a great co-op program plus they are really into sports being the official eyewear of the PGA tour!
