What do you do with all of those old lenses? Donate to Lions Club is definitely the first thing, but many are unusable. Jewelry designer Jen Mazer has taken old lenses and recycled and reused them into Jewelry, primarily brooches and necklaces.
I look at this as an opportunity for an optical store. You have the product (lenses) pins are readily available from craft stores all you need is glue and paint. Make your own and sell as one of a kind jewelry. Another idea, if you cater to kids, put a bunch of old lenses in a basket with crayons and let kids decorate their own. Keeps kids occupied (and adults too) You can always give the parent the brooch pin to glue on later.
To make a necklace, drill a hole(s) and pull through a leather strap, shoelace or even an eyeglass retainer. (I like the add-on sale)
To make earring, drill hole , put in small ring and attach to earrings (available at craft or bead stores)
If you are not a painter, you can always layer pictures, plants and fabrics on the pins and use a clear coat of varnish to adhere to the lens.
What a great way to recycle lenses, engage your customers, increase the talk factor, give you an edge over your competition, add fun and sell some products at the same time!
