Green Medicine and EyeCare

As the consumer has become more aware and into alternative medicines and ‘green’ health, it will be more important for you to look into and practice ‘green medicine’. A good resource, Practice Green Health offers a series of FREE webinars and one I recommend is Getting Started with Green Medicine. The webinar is Sept 4 @1 pm EST.

Eye Bogglers:

  • Green Medicine: A Primer, a paper co-authored by Hernke, more than 82,000 chemicals documented under the EPA Toxic Substances and Control act have been developed, used and discarded in the environment within the last fifty years. The majority of those chemicals have not been tested for potential disastrous toxicity in humans, animals or other natural life
  • At least 175 plants native to North America are for sale in the non-prescription medicinal market in the U.S. Many of these are collected from the wild in large quantities (hundreds of thousands of plants) for commercial markets in the U.S. and abroad. For example, during the last few years, about 65 million goldenseal plants and 34 million ginseng plants have been harvested from the wild in the forests of the eastern United States on an annual basis.
  • In the United States, the market for medicinal herbs is worth more than $3 billion. Many of the plants supplying this industry are wild collected in vast quantities because techniques to cultivate them on a commercial scale have not been developed. Consider the implications of such popularity for these plants.
  • More than 60 million consumers in the U.S. take herbal remedies. More doctors are recommending herbal medicines and, some health insurance plans offer coverage for alternative health treatments such as herbal remedies.
  • The U.S. medical industry generates more than 2 million tons of waste per year, environmental advocates say. Some of that waste makes its way to incinerators and, when burned, releases dioxin, mercury and other toxins.
  • In the mid-1990s, there were more than 5,000 medical waste incinerators in the United States, said Stacy Malkan, a steering committee member of H2E. Today, there are fewer than 100.
