I have been wearing progressive lenses for over ten years now, many different brands because being in the Optical industry, I have easy access to so many. I usually wear Shamir’s Office lens when I am working at the computer. I like all my glasses and lenses, about 10 different pairs, but do not enjoy wearing them every day, all day. However, as I am a presbyope needing a +2.25 add these days and distance correction for my one myopic eye and farsighted other eye, I have to wear glasses all the time.
I am a now a brand new contact lens wearer at the age of 56. I have been in the optical business 20 years but it wasn’t until I took my 17 year old niece to get contact lenses because she refused to wear her glasses that I thought about them seriously. My niece learned to take her contacts in and out in less than 20 minutes and has happily worn her contacts every day since the first try. I was very impressed with Encinitas OD, Dr Barry Mozlin and his staff, Gail and Karen. They made if very clear that it didn’t matter how many visits it took, my niece would be provided with the best vision possible. They were very friendly and talked to me about the process, what to expect and continually reassured me that if my niece had any problems, they would keep working with her. At the same time, they kept telling me how much contact lens technology has improved. We only needed two visits but while I was there watching, listening and waiting, reading the information materials etc, I decided to try multifocal lenses. It took about 3 visits for me but I can’t believe that just two weeks later I am sitting at my computer, typing away with a small screen and tiny font, at the same time looking out the window watching the kite boarders out on the ocean. I am wearing my contact lenses!
I will still use my glasses, especially if I am going to spend hours at the computer, but I love having the option of not needing them all the time, especially when I am going out to a party or playing tennis. Two of my friends are thinking about trying multifocal contact lenses now as well.
My lesson from this is that the placement of informative patient materials in the waiting area and the involvement of the office staff with not just the patient but anyone accompanying the patient is really important in terms of maximising the opportunity to bring in a new patients, give them confidence to try something new and of course, for repeat business. It is not just good for business it is good for the patient!
