Health Care Reform And Eco Impact By Earth911
Written by Cathy on February 25, 2010 – 9:03 pm -by Katherine J. Chen; More than 30 countries around the world operate under some form of a universal health care system, but it’s still not practiced in the United States, and 15 percent of Americans are uninsured.
In a September 2009 speech to Congress, President Obama discussed the changes he envisions for citizens with and without health insurance. Under his proposed universal health care plan, he says insurance companies would no longer be able to refuse coverage to the ill, and patients will not be expected to pay out of pocket for expensive treatments or vital operations.
But the health care industry is not one grounded on ecological principles. In fact, it is one of the single most polluting industries in the country. American hospitals generate approximately 6,600 tons of waste daily. As much as 85 percent of that is non-hazardous solid waste, such as paper, cardboard, food waste, metal, glass and plastics, according to Practice Green Health.
The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH), an international campaign that champions natural health over a reliance on pharmaceutical drugs, is one organization that is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of the sustainability side of health care. Read the full Story at Earth911

Recycled Circuit Board Eyeglass Holder
Written by Cathy on January 30, 2010 – 12:55 pm -What a creative and unique way to keep those toxic laden circuit boards out of landfills- Reuse them and make necklaces, ID badge holders or eyeglass holders. Debby Arem Designs, who sells on Etsy, says ‘ A funky badge holder made from recycled vintage circuit boards, vintage lucite and glass beads from the 1950’s as well as recycled colored “bell” telephone wire from the 1950’s! I’ve also taken very old capacitors from the 1940’s and repurposed them into additional decorative components.’
They sell for $67 online at Etsy

Fashion Jewelry Made With Recycled Optical Lenses
Written by Cathy on January 14, 2010 – 8:08 pm -This came to us via Bead Arts- it’s an interesting idea for the craftsperson to reuse and recycle optical lenses. I like how they did the picture (a little vintage) and the stone dazzlers are unique. You could do the same type of concept with buttons, or broken jewelry or paint.

Hoya Recycled Lens Holiday Ornaments By Michele B
Written by Cathy on December 14, 2009 – 7:30 pm -Another entry from Michele B for our Hoya Recycled Lens Contest! Gold paint and jewels make up a glitzy look, perfect for the holidays! I like how she cut up the lenses to make a star. Michele B is a certified optician, blogger and frame designer who works both Florida and France. (I think the ‘Chrisnukah’ is from ‘The OC’. Adam Brody combined Christmas and Hanukkah. I was a die hard OC Fan for the first 2 years until that Mischa Barton got way too self pitying and miserable)
