For those of us who have been in the Optical Industry for a long time it is hard for us to step back and put ourselves into the shoes of a non-optical consumer. My sister is here visiting and she recounted a story to me about her “Mom’s Cool Reading Glasses” experience. It is a fun story and helps you step out of your shoes and into the optical consumer’s shoes, in a helpful way. Enjoy:
MOM’S COOL READING GLASSES BY HAZEL PLATZER:
My kids think their aging mother is a permanent embarrassment. This only gets worse when I get to the point where I need reading glasses. My son realised this inevitable moment had come when he had to get me out of Disneyland. Darkness had fallen, I discovered I could no longer see the map and we were lost. He was only 12 but I found out he had very good map reading skills and much better eyesight than me. It’s taken me a few years to really admit to myself that I need to carry a pair of reading glasses around with me all the time; like everyone else at this stage of life I can never find them even if I’ve remembered to bring a pair.
My next problem was finding a pair I liked and a way of attaching them to myself which wouldn’t further fuel my kids’ unpolitically correct ageism. I was sure that glasses on a chain would only make them more unkind. Also, even though my kids think anyone over 25 qualifies for euthanasia, I do still ride a bike and there’s only room for one chain on a bike as far as I’m concerned.
To my great delight I discover the sporty looking CliC readers; instead of a chain the frames have a built in neck piece made of molded nylon which is firm and flexible. In addition the frames snap together at the bridge holding the lenses together with a neodymium magnet. You can pull them apart when not reading and leave them to hang round your neck. I get a pair, pausing only to choose from a very wide range of colours, diopters and photo reactive tints as fast as I can, and await a response from my kids. They are a little unsure at first. They’ve never seen a pair before and at first they consider putting me into unfashionable nerd category and Ugly Betty crosses their minds. Then I am redeemed when they spot Dr. Sid Hammerback wearing them in CSI NY and Samuel Jackson in Freedomland.
Then I find out the magnet will hold at 100 mph but think at my age I’m not going to be going that fast. You can go even faster with the CliC Goggles. Check them out on Ron’s Optical website.
